The last time Teambox made a play for big businesses, it partnered with Box.com (PDF), an enterprise cloud storage specialist, to provide a bundle that included 15 GB of free storage. Now, the Barcelona-based company is giving IT managers the ability to deploy the company's technology behind their own firewalls.
To address the concerns of security-conscious firms, Teambox -- one of Enterprise Storage Forum's "Six Hot Storage Startups" to watch -- has launched a locally hosted solution named Teambox On-Premise, appropriately enough. In a statement, Teambox detailed the reasons why public cloud file sharing and collaboration offerings are a non-starter for some businesses.
"Many organizations are governed by strict regulatory compliance, security or data protection requirements and can't leverage modern cloud-hosted services. For example, healthcare providers face HIPAA and financial institutions Sarbanes-Oxley," said Teambox.
"Regulations impact and can limit many, if not most technology decisions within these industries," added the company.
Teambox On-Premise solves that issue by bringing the platform's capabilities in-house and under the protections of an organization's security setup. Accordingly, the company asserts that the product allows enterprises to extend shared storage and collaboration features while enjoying the following benefits:
- Meets internal security and compliance mandates
- Adheres to data privacy and retention policies
- Ensures control over SLAs (service level agreements)
- Allows organizations to optimize hardware for business needs
Security and compliance expert Sean Sherman notes that the software can easily slot into an enterprise's security setup without compromising sensitive data or running afoul of regulatory restrictions.
"The Teambox On-Premise solution offers a way for many organizations to quickly deploy within existing security practices, standards and infrastructure. The Teambox VM can be completely contained and managed within the corporate enclave to assure the business maintains security and compliance controls to manage issues such as privacy rules, access controls, system monitoring and data location," informed Sherman in a statement.
Teambox's approach is an effective way of offering highly regulated firms some of the productivity-enhancing perks of cloud collaboration services, according to 451 Research director Alan Pelz-Sharpe.
"Offering an on-premise option makes a great deal of sense, and helps to further differentiate Teambox in the collaboration market. Teambox On-Premise aims to provide a comprehensive collaboration solution for organizations facing strict regulatory compliance, security and data requirements," stated Pelz-Sharpe in prepared remarks.
Teambox On-Premise is available now. Prices start at $15 per seat per month (one-year minimum).
