today announced that it will begin shipping libraries equipped with Sony Electronics' Advanced Intelligent Tape(TM) (AIT-3) tape drives, incorporating write-once-read-many (WORM) recording technology. The drives, now available on Qualstar's TLS-4000 and RLS-Series Simply Reliable library families, provide non-rewritable, non-erasable data storage at a significant cost advantage over other mediums such as optical disk or RAID.
Qualstar's new WORM-equipped libraries are designed to comply with the data retention requirements of federal and state agencies that are mandating unalterable, non-erasable information storage. The write-once protection built into WORM tapes and drives, when combined with Qualstar's patented robotic technology, enable enterprises to rapidly archive and retrieve copies of documents, images, e-mail and other data at lower cost than any other storage technology.
"New federal regulations, such as those outlined under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), place significantly greater requirements on healthcare organizations and financial institutions of all sizes to preserve the content and ensure the security of their stored documents," said Bob Covey, Qualstar's vice president of marketing. "As the first company to ship tape libraries incorporating Sony's WORM technology, we are enabling organizations to meet those and other new regulations, using technology whose reliability has been repeatedly proven in the marketplace."
Qualstar's automated tape libraries are designed to hold as many as 600 AIT-3 cartridges, yielding a native capacity of 60 terabytes, making them an appropriate enterprise-scale solution. The AIT-3 drives also feature multi-function capability, enabling the library to support WORM applications while concurrently handling backup and other routine data protection requirements.
"AIT WORM technology offers advanced data security in a compact form-factor and at a price per terabyte that is lower than most other alternatives," said John Woelbem, director of OEM tape storage solutions marketing for Sony Electronics' Business Solutions and Systems Company. "Qualstar's integration of AIT WORM in its full line of tape libraries makes the technology available to companies that are looking to address the additional data protection requirements imposed by governmental agencies and certain commercial applications."
"Organizations are increasingly relying on a combination of RAID and tape to protect their critical information throughout its entire lifecycle," added Dr. Phil Storey, CEO of XenData, a developer of software products for fixed content data storage management. "We see Sony's WORM tape playing an ever-greater role in helping them meet their requirements for legal compliance. Coupled with the proven dependability of Qualstar's libraries, this ensures that authenticated data files are accessible when needed."
Qualstar's TLS and RLS tape libraries with AIT-3 WORM capability, with total native data storage capacity ranging from one to 60 terabytes, are available exclusively through its worldwide network of authorized resellers.
