NEC recently announced the HYDRAstor HS8-3000 line of data deduplication systems, claiming twice the throughput of the previous generation. NEC cites performance of 2.7TB /hour/node (750MBps), and throughput of up to 148.5TB/hour (41,250MBps) in a high-end grid configuration. The company also reduced power consumption by as much as 60% in terms of watts per MB per second.
NECs grid-based architecture includes 2U ccelerator nodes and storage nodes that can be scaled independently. Each accelerator node includes up to six GbE ports, or four 10GbE and two GbE interfaces.
NECs DataRedux technology provides inline, global, variable-length deduplication. Data is compressed after it is deduplicated.
Storage nodes have 12TB of capacity on 1TB, 2.5-inch SATA drives, or up to 157.5TB when factoring in data deduplication and compression, according to Gideon Senderov, who is in charge of NECs product management and technical marketing.
Other features of the HYDRAstor HS8-3000 series include the companys Distributed Resilient Data technology, an erasure coding technique that allows users to mix resiliency levels (up to six) for different applications. NEC claims a 1.5X improvement in data protection vs. traditional RAID 6 implementations.
The systems are designed primarily for long-term storage of unstructured data
Pricing on the HYDRAstor HS8-3000 line starts at $120,000 for a single-node configuration with 12TB of raw capacity and 2.7TB-per-hour throughput. A high-end HS8-3110 has 1.3PB of raw capacity, 148.5TB-per-hour throughput, 55 accelerator nodes and 110 storage nodes. Shipments are slated for mid-February.
Options include NECs RepliGrid (WAN-optimized replication with encryption), Optimized Copy (WAN-optimized copies for OST), and HYDRAlock (WORM file system).
