BakBone Software has unveiled a new data protection solution that promises recovery in as little as 30 seconds for Exchange, SQL Server and Windows file system data.
Based on software from continuity and recovery appliance maker Asempra, the new NetVault: Real-Time Data Protector can recover individual mailboxes or mailbox items without performing brick-level backups. Exchange servers, individual storage groups and individual files can be recovered quickly to any point in time.
"There aren't really any other folks out there who offer this level of recovery," said BakBone product marketing manager Matt Law.
Jeff Drescher, BakBone's vice president of marketing, said Real-Time Data Protector "jumps past traditional backups with BakBone you're always on, continuously capturing every Exchange transaction or file system write to high-value, time-sensitive documents."
Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Lauren Whitehouse called the offering "continuous data protection for Windows servers and applications saving data continuously, which reduces the amount of data that could be lost between disruption and recovery. If there is an interruption, an IT administrator can fail over to the secondary copy. Real-Time serves up the application and data rapidly to minimize downtime.
"It's a nice complement to batch backup strategies, especially for organizations that have tiers of applications that they can't afford to be without," she said.
Real-Time Data Protector integrates with traditional backup technologies, including BakBone's own NetVault: Backup. It works as a standalone solution as well as alongside NetVault: Backup and Application Plugin Modules, which offer simplified traditional backup for applications.
The company says recovered data is uncorrupted and completely usable by the application on first recovery, and Virtual On-Demand Recovery (VODR) eliminates the need to wait for a complete recovery before users can continue their work.
Users can search for e-mails by keywords, subjects, dates or users across all mailboxes without analyzing individual mailboxes, and individual mailbox items can be restored to a PST file for e-discovery or investigative purposes.
Real-Time Data Protector can also recover protected data to an alternate server or location across a LAN or WAN while automatically updating Active Directory and Domain Name Service (DNS) entries.
Dennis Martin, founder and president of Demartek, stated that "Our lab validation tests have proven that this technology is straightforward to use and that Exchange, SQL Server and Windows file system data is easy to recover from specific points in time. For organizations that cannot afford gaps in data protection, NetVault: Real-Time Data Protector offers a compelling complement to traditional backups."
Pricing for Bakbone's NetVault: Real-Time Data Protector starts at $18,750.
